The “Zhu Chenggong” Silver Coin

      The coin is aFirst Grade Cultural Relic, made in the reign of Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing dynasty, mostly found in Zhangzhou, Fujian province from the
      Each coin has an irregular shape, some with a “万” (ten thousand) pattern (some without) along the edge. The coin is 3.7- 3.98 cm in diameter and about 19.5 to 26.4 grams in weight. On the front are four characters in regular script “漳州军饷(Zhangzhou Military Supplies)” and three characters in cursive script “朱成功(Zhu Chenggong)”, and on the back are four characters in regular script “足文通行(Zuwen Tongxing)”.
      In 1962, the three characters “Zhu Chenggong” were first recognized by Mr. Guomoruo, a famous archaeologist and historian when he visited the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall in Xiamen. Referring to historical records, he was convinced that when Zheng Chenggong came to Zhangzhou between 1650 and 1654, this kind of silver coin was cast to offer food and salaries for the soldiers, and was possibly later used for maritime trade.
