White Jade Flat Vase with Ears and Cover Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)

The whole jade bottle is white except a corner at the bottom which is brown. The body of the bottle is oblate and it has a cover on the round mouth. Its neck is straight and its shoulder is slightly oblique. Its belly is oblate and it has round foot. The cover is nesting on the mouth. Two tubular ears are attached on the both sides of the neck and there are some decorations on the ears such as clouds and dragons. There are decorations at the mouth, neck and the bottom such as the Hui Patten (the pattern looks like the Chinese character “回”), poems and some pictures. Round blank spaces
are reserved on both sides of the belly. The artist decorated pictures in the blank space such as mountains, figurines, lotus, willows, corridor and pavilions. Sometimes the scenery is about the elegant visitors wandering in the yard and sometimes it is about the lotuses in the West Lake (a famous sightseeing spot in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province). On the other side of the belly, the artist described flourish willows waving in the gentle breeze and birds singing in the sky. There are two poems carved on both sides of the belly and the poems used to be red but now we can’t see it clearly. The first poem is :“ tender breeze is fondling the leaves of the lotus; when I see the green leaves, I want to find the red lotus. If you have been taking a boat on Kunming Lake, you’ll be surprised that the beautiful scenery is familiar with here.” The second poem is: you are rich enough to possess the fortune but the food is the most important. The Dai are in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province but the Lin are in Qingbo Gate, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province.The jade culture makes the great achievement in Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Reign. The number of the quantity, the beauty of the design, the skills of carving and the material of the jade, the spread of the functions are much higher than that in the other dynasties. The artists in Qing Dynasties were good at make use of some techniques in painting and carving so they combined all advantages of the skills and they absorbed the ways from abroad at the same time. So they created so many delicate beautiful jade sculptures.
The bottle used to be collected in the palace of the royal in Qing Dynasty. The carving is fine and delicate; the structure is precise. It was polished carefully so we can’t find any obvious clue. The bottle is as clear as the glass. The decorations on the jade bottle are about traditional Chinese culture. It has obvious characteristic in its time and skills.
