Map of Zheng Chenggong Recapturing Taiwan
Collection situation
On April 21, 1661, Zheng Chenggong led an army of 25,000 soldiers and more than 400 warships to set out against the south wind from Liaoluo Bay, Jinmen. Having overcome the bad weather at sea and lack of food along the way, his troops successfully made landfall through Luermen waterway and Heliao Port on April 30 by making use of the astronomical spring tide. The two sides fought fiercely on land and at sea. 240 elite soldiers led by Dutch captain Thomas Bedell wiped out by Zheng's army on land. Zheng's army bombed and sank the Hector, the Dutch capital ship, and fought back the rest of the Dutch ships. On May 4, Zheng successfully recovered Chiqian City, one of the two Dutch forts in Taiwan. He then laid siege to Zeelandia for more than nine months. During this period, he fought back the reinforcements sent by the Dutch colonists from Batavia and rejected the request of the Dutch invaders who tried to buy Zheng Chenggong's retreat with money. In January 1662, Zheng’s army recaptured Utrecht outside Taiwan, forcing the Dutch colonists to surrender and sign the Treaty of Peace. This ended the 38-year Dutch rule on Taiwan.
