Yongli Tongbao

Collection situation

This bronze currency was cast and issued during the Zheng regime.
Yongli Tongbao is mainly made of Japanese red copper, scripted in either seal script or semi-cursive script with size and weight basically equivalent to that of Zhe Er Qian. The coin was mainly unearthed in Taiwan and coastal areas in southern Fujian.
After the collapse of the Southern Ming Longwu Regime, Zhu Youlang, Ming Gui Lord of the Ming dynasty, proclaimed himself Emperor Yongli in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province. Zheng Chenggong honored and followed the Yongli Regime.
In the fifth year of the reign of Emperor Yongli (the eighth year of the reign of Emperor Shunzhi in the Qing dynasty, 1651), in order to consolidate the anti-Qing base in the southeast coast, Zheng Chenggong decided to cast Yongli Tongbao to pay military salaries, finance, trade and stabilize the economy at the Base.
Later,Zheng Jing (the eldest son of Zheng Chenggong) also bought red copper from Japan twice in the twentieth year of the reign of Emperor Yongli (the fifth year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing dynasty, 1661) and the twenty-eighth year of the reign of Emperor Yongli (the thirteenth year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing dynasty, 1661 and 1674) to cast Yongli Tongbao copper coins.
As the currency issued by the Zheng regime, Yongli Tongbao was not only widely circulated in Fujian and Taiwan, but also had a great impact on the local social economy and were used in Zheng's maritime trade with foreign countries.
