Zheng Chenggong was Granted the Imperial Surname. In 1645, cavalry of the Manchu dynasty swept across the south of the Jiangnan, annihilate the Hongguang regime of the Southern Ming dynasty. Zhu Yujian founded the Southern Ming Longwu regime in Fuzhou with support from both civil and military officials fleeing to the South and Zheng Zhilong, Zheng Sen’s father. One day in August 1645, Zheng Zhilong and Zheng Sen (Zheng Chenggong) paid a visit to Emperor Longwu. Zheng Sen answered all kinds of questions raised by the emperor fluently and put forward his unique views on the general trend of the world. The emperor valued his talent so that he granted Zheng Sen the Imperial Surname “Zhu” and a new surname“Chenggong”, and appointed him as commander of the central army of the imperial battalion with the imperial sword, allowing him to act as the emperor’s son-in-law. Accepting the name, Zheng Sen was deeply grateful to Emperor Longwu and determined to dedicate himself to serving the Ming dynasty. From then on, Zheng Sen became “Zhu Chenggong”, and he was better known internationally by his honorific title, Koxinga.
