Bronze Mirror with Designs of Birds, Biting Silk Ribbons, Tang Dynasty
Collection situation
The shape of the bronze mirror is an eight-pedal sunflower. The pattern on the mirror back is divided into two areas, the inner area and the outer area. The main pattern in the inner area is two Tuan holding a ribbon with beak. Two Luan spread the wings, raise the tail and hold a longevity ribbon with beak. Flower and leave pattern is decorated in the eight petals of the outer area. The entire pattern is arranged exquisitely, and the lines are bright and natural.
Two Luan Holding a Ribbon is a popular pattern in the Tang Dynasty. The ribbon is usually long. There are also patterns with One Luan Holding a Ribbon. Luan is a folk flying bird which symbolizes auspiciousness, and “long ribbon” symbolizes longevity. (ribbon and longevity are homophonic in Chinese).
