City walls of Xiamen

Collection situation

This is a restored ancient wall according to the Zhongzuosuo City (Xiamen City) in the Ming Dynasty. It is made of collected old materials of ancient city walls. Ancient walls are extremely rare in Xiamen. There is only a 64-meter-long city wall behind Xiamen Public Security Bureau, which symbolizes the history of Xiamen City.
With over 600 years of history, Xiamen City was built around the 27th year of Hongwu (1394) when  Marques’s Jiangxia Zhou Dexing set up a defense in the Southeast Coast with the command of Zhu Yuanzhang (the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty). Zhu believed the good defense ability of the walls. At that time, Zhu built 16 cities in Fujian, including Xiamen. In the ancient times, city wall is regarded as the symbol of a city. Xiamen, as the “Gateway to Southeast China” in the Southeast Coast, walls have played a great role in resisting pirates and foreign aggression.
