Collection situation
This black-and-white photo is a real scene of the both sides of Kulangsu, shot on the Sunlight Rock in early 20th century. Although there have been some Western buildings in Kulangsu, fields and Southern Fujian ancient houses can be dimly seen among these sparsely buildings. On the other side is the area from Lujiang Road to Shapowei in the downtown of Xiamen. Xiamen University was a wilderness at that time. And this color photo is still a real scene of Kulangsu shot, in the early 21th century at the same spot and the same angle. Looking down from the Sunlight Rock, glamorous modern Western buildings of Kulangsu and modern urban features on the Xiamen Island enhance each other’s charm. The sharp contrast of the two photos distinctly reflects the great changes of Xiamen in the past century.
